In simple terms, place value in mathematics is simply telling you that in numbers that contain more than two digits, the value of each digit will differ even if they look the same. Let’s take the example of the number 66, the two digits are six but their actual values are 6 and 60. To understand this skill, children are taught to look at numbers through their expanded and compressed forms (standard forms). In the former, a number like 66 can be expanded to look like this 66 = 60 + 6. This is so because the first number is worth sixty units while the second is worth six units. In this case the use of the word units should not be confused with how place values are expressed. When studying place values, children are taught that the first number coming from the right side towards the left is the smaller number; it is the units place; also called the ones place. The second number is in the tenths place. Any digit that finds itself in the tenths place is to be multiplied by ten to get its actual value. Hence is some problems, children are shown numbers that are underlined and asked to find the value of those numbers. These 1st grade place value worksheets also teach children this skill through the help of visual aids and pictures. There are activities in which children are required to look at a picture that is illustrated with arrows and tell what the number of arrows reflects in place values. By so doing, they will come up with the expanded and standard form of a number. Furthermore, we also have worksheets that teach place value using blocks of tenths and ones. Children will need to activate their addition skill to find out what each set of blocks adds up to. Each worksheet is a printable pdf file that can be used both at home and in the classroom. As a teacher, these are the test sheets that will make a difference in your class. Print out each sheet and share with your children. Remember to keep the answer sheets away from students :) We keep updating our place value worksheets for grade 1 collection. Come back for more and please share.

Place Value Worksheets for Grade 1: Building Strong Mathematical Foundations

The study of mathematics is an integral part of a child's education. It builds the foundation for critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will be used throughout their lives. One of the key concepts in mathematics is place value, which is the value of each digit in a number based on its position. Place value is an essential building block for future mathematical understanding and success. That is why, it is important for grade 1 students to master the concept of place value through comprehensive and effective learning materials.

What is Place Value?

Place value refers to the value of each digit in a number based on its position. For example, in the number "532", the value of 5 is in the hundreds place, the value of 3 is in the tens place, and the value of 2 is in the ones place. Each digit's value increases tenfold as you move to the left. This means that the value of a digit in the hundreds place is ten times greater than the value of the same digit in the tens place, and a hundred times greater than the same digit in the ones place.

Why is Place Value Important for Grade 1 Students?

Place value is important for grade 1 students to learn as it lays the foundation for understanding more complex mathematical concepts in the future. By understanding place value, students will be able to perform arithmetic operations more efficiently, understand large numbers, and perform mental arithmetic. In addition, place value helps students to understand the relationships between numbers, which is an essential component of problem-solving skills.
