Comparing fractions is determining whether the other fraction is less than, greater than, or equal to the other. There are different methods we can use to compare fractions. As we all know, or if you have not heard of it yet, there are different types of fractions. fractions with like and unlike denominators, and fractions that are mixed or improper.
Now, when it comes to comparison between fractions, we might come across all these types of fractions. When comparing fractions, we should start with something easy such as smaller fractions. As an example, let’s try to identify which number is greater than or less than the other number for ½ and 10/10. As you can see, 10/10 can be simplified into a whole number which is 1. So, which of ½ and 1 is greater than the other? 1 is greater than ½ therefore ½ is less than 1 or ½ < 1.
Now that we know how to determine which fraction is greater or lesser, let’s step up a bit by comparing fractions with the same denominators. Let’s have an example, 8/9 compared to 2/9, which fraction is greater or lesser than the other fraction? As you can see, 8 is greater than 2 therefore the answer should be 8/9 > 2/9 which can be read as 8/9 is greater than 2/9.
Lastly, we’ll have 5/10 and 15/30 for our last example. You will notice that they do not have the same denominator, given any other circumstances, we would have to look for their least common denominator or LCD. But in this situation, we can simplify both fractions. 5/10, both the numerator and denominator are divisible by 5 and if we divide them with 5, we will be left with ½. The next fraction being compared to it can also be simplified and both the numerator and denominator are divisible by 15 therefore the 15/30 will become ½ as well.
Therefore, 5/10 and 15/30 or ½ and ½ are both equal.
