Subtractions with numbers up to 20

Subtraction is the process of taking away a number from another number. In subtraction, there are numbers which we subtract another number from, they are called minuend. Of course, the numbers that are subtracted from the minuend, are called subtrahends and the answer to that subtraction is called the difference. So now, let’s start subtracting numbers up to twenty. Let’s start with the number 20 itself as the minuend, and 10 as the subtrahend. If we take away 10 from 20, we would be left with 10. If you are wondering how we got that answer, you can just count how many numbers are between 10 and 20, and that would be the difference, or you can try doing vertical subtraction where you put 20, the minuend, above 10, the subtrahend, and subtract the numbers from their respective numbers according to their column. If we put 20 and 10 vertically, both the zeros will be in the same column hence we subtract them from each other which will give us 0. The next column contains 2 and 1, we now subtract them from each other and that will be 1. Now, we have our answer which is 10. For our next example, we’re going to have 17 minus 7. Again, we can just count how many numbers are between the given numbers or we can use vertical subtraction to subtract them from each other. In this example, we will put 17 on top and 7 below. According to their columns, we must subtract 7 from 7 which will give us a zero. The next column only has 1 and nothing below it to subtract, therefore we must bring it down as is, giving us an answer of 10 as well. You can keep doing this vertical subtraction for easier subtraction of the numbers from each other.

Subtracting with Pictures
In subtracting pictures, you must first hold an image or think of it. For example, you have 5 apples on your table and you want to give 2 of them to your seatmate. How many apples would be left on your table? It would be 3. Now, we are going to step up the numbers a bit. Say, you have 15 lemons, and your friend wants to have 7 of them. How many lemons would be left for you if you gave 7 lemons to your friend? That’s correct! That would be 8 lemons left. Looking at the picture, you can count which fruits will be left if you count the fruits in the picture minus the subtrahend. It is as easy as vertical subtraction, if not, much easier. To continue with subtracting with pictures, keep in mind that you can also try to cover the figures which are to be subtracted from the whole numbers and count the pictures that would be left uncovered. This way, you can practice your counting and at the same time, you learn how to subtract while interacting with the given pictures. Subtracting with pictures can also be done with the visualization of the learner to help them solve without needing learning materials and it could help them be more accustomed to subtraction. They can use it in real-life situations when they need to subtract something, they just need to visualize the number of figures in their mind and subtract the subtrahend from the figures they imagined. This way it will not only make them a master at subtraction but also a fast solver. Although this technique might only work for small numbers as it may get too hard for them to subtract with pictures if the numbers are too large for them to visualize.
